The rugs and carpets that make your home even more beautiful and keep your feet warm are expensive investments. Wall to wall carpeting is usually replaced on average every seven years. Area rugs and decorative carpets are often replaced during a remodelling, or home sale. Keeping them looking their best for as long as possible is a valuable use of your time! Sure it may seem like another task to add to your weekend to-do list, but being able to enjoy your carpets and rugs for years to come makes it all worthwhile!
Get Rid of the Dirt!
You may think that this is a non-starter, but many homeowners forget how much dirt wreaks havoc on your carpets and rugs! Either take your shoes off when you enter your home, or use entrance mats to get the brunt of the dirt off your shoes upon coming home. Walking on your carpets or rugs with shoes on allows dirt to accumulate. This dirt gradually wears away at the fibers that make up the rug, slowly deteriorating the carpet itself. And of course, vacuuming! Make sure to vacuum your carpets and rugs on a regular basis to lift up any dirt and debris that may be trying to make your lovely carpet its new home. For carpets and rugs in high traffic areas, aim for two to three times per week. Always make sure that your vacuum’s bag or bag-less cylinder has been recently emptied and that you are using the right brush.
See Spot Clean
A stain is any spot on your carpet that becomes a permanent stain. Most carpets and rugs come with “Spot Removal Chart” that tells you how you should treat a variety of different substances that may accidentally end up on your carpet or rug. It’s a good idea to keep your Spot Chart with the necessary cleaning supplies so you can spring into action. If your carpet did not come with a spot chart, turn to the internet for spot treatment advice. Be careful what you read though, and always make sure you’re getting your information from a reliable source. Contacting the manufacturer is always a safe bet. Lastly, when you are spot treating a carpet or rug always blot – never rub. Scrubbing away at a spot embeds the substance even further into the fibers increasing the chance of it becoming a permanent stain.
Keep It Fresh!
Rotating the furniture that lives on your carpet or rug is another way of adding life! Whether it’s wall to wall carpeting or a beautiful area rug, move the couch to the other side of the room, and give a frequently used portion of the rug a little break. Alternatively, you can simply rotate an area rug until the same effect has been achieved! Another way to keep your carpets and rugs looking young for longer is to invest in professional cleaning. Most carpets and rugs should receive a thorough professional cleaning once every 18-24 months.
